Prolific Marvel

Despite Marvel’s slow entrance into the contemporary age of comic book films, their current success with is movie-making miracle.  They have nearly reinvented the comic book movie vocabulary, redefined costume fashion, and changed most expectations in terms of comic’s continuity and narrative design.  Most expectations in terms of one shots, prequel, sequels, reboots, and preboots have been successfully redefined by Marvel entertainment.  Even with Christopher Nolan’s successes for DC entertainment, the standard bearer for comic book movies is unequivocally Marvel.  Looking at some of Marvel’s most ambitious ongoing and future projects I will discuss Marvel’s revolutionary impact on the industry.

Prolific Marvel

Spiderman

After a successful franchise staring actor Tobey Maguire, Marvel has planned a new Spiderman franchise.  Starring endearing young actor _________________, the new stories will occur well before the current franchise. possibly influenced by Marvel’s Ultimate line of comics we may likely see an entirely new take on the character. I don’t believe this new series is a prequel so I can only assume instead the movie will be a reboot.  I believe the best definition of a reboot is a (re) conceptualization of the franchise driven character.  All of the things that may be changed could include character origin, motivation, and possibly even costume; if we take the Batman’s example seriously.

Speaking of Batman for an example, I would compare it to the difference between the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher versions of the character.  Burton though a comfortable proponent of comedy, his Batman wasn’t inclined to the kind of wry campiness that Schumacher later take aspired to.

If the movie features Peter with Spiderman powers than a new origin is n the works. Marvel and Fox plan to satisfy audiences with more or a prequel to be exact.  A sequel would be best described as a series of stories that precede the last.  Since _________________ is a significantly different body type than Tobey, we can only presume what other new characteristics we can expect to see from the new Spiderman.
X-men: First Class

Completing another series of films, the X-men completed their first cycle with a new director and a discernible difference in tone; of course their audience wants more.  Thought the studio is only calling this work a prequel, contrasts in continuity will probably result in the making of a “preboot” when everything is complete.

But the new series as they define it will not feature any of the recent cast members except Charles Xavier and Magneto.  From what I understand, the rest of the cast will be clothed in a much more traditional set of costumes that will resemble the super hero garb of days gone by.

Avengers

On business strategy terms alone, the Avengers is one Marvel’s most impressive new projects.  Defining example’s revolutionary bent; this business strategy is the only one that has no antecedents in recent comic book movie history.  In fact in terms of trend setting, the casting for the project is so impressive that DC comics has nearly already endorsed Marvel’s planned marketing and development plan.  DC plans to use the exact same strategy to build their future Justice League project.

Marvel’s development plan includes building a cast of actors based on the successes of other pre-released individual movies.  Projecting confidence as well as foresight, Marvel’s planned individual franchises like Ironman or the future franchises like Captain America and Thor effectively build audience anticipation. With a foundation of business success ingrained, it will be far easier to assure ticket sales by way of audience character knowledge and familiarity.

Even failed franchise one shot attempts like the Incredible Hulk can contribute to this strategy.  In fact the Avengers scalable construction and business practice are nothing like the previous Fox examples.  To be exact this isn’t Fox at all; this example is totally Marvel’s alone.  And so are the individual character franchises that feed it.  After years of efficiently promoting their own characters to Fox, Marvel has finally emerged as an individual film studio capable of funding and developing their own successful properties.

Though it cannot be sure that Marvel is finished casting nor is it possible to tell exactly what the costumes will be like.  We can only assume that these costumes, like two of the main characters, will likely take the Ultimate line’s influence as well.
